The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) & Lifeline Explained

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and Lifeline are government initiatives designed to help low-income households afford essential communication services like internet and phone access. Here’s a breakdown of each program:

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)

  • Goal: Reduce the cost of broadband internet service for eligible households.
  • Benefits: Qualified households can receive a monthly discount on broadband service from participating providers. The discount can be applied to standalone internet plans or bundled internet-phone packages.
  • Eligibility: Income level is a key factor. Households with at least one member participating in certain government programs (like SNAP or Medicaid) generally qualify. Additionally, your income must be below a certain threshold based on the size of your household.

Lifeline

  • Goal: Make phone service more affordable for low-income consumers.
  • Benefits: Eligible households can receive a monthly discount on phone service from participating providers. This discount can be applied to mobile phone plans or landline service.
  • Eligibility: Similar to ACP, income level is a major factor. Participation in certain government programs and income thresholds based on household size determine eligibility.
